Description
Listed for auction is an exceedingly rare first flight postal cover commemorating the First Official Air Mail - Australia to Papua and New - Guinea signed by the crew which consisted of the pilot Charles Ulm [1898 1934], the co-pilot George Urquhart Allan [1900 1986] and the flight engineer R.N Bolton [? - ?]. The flight left from Australia on July 24, 1934 in a monoplane named ''Faith of Australia'' and carried 10,145 letters and after stops in Papua landed in New Guinea on July 27, 1934. The pilot Charles Ulm was a prominent Australian pioneering aviator who served in World War I at Gallipoli in 1915, and also on the Western Front in 1918. Ulm is best remembered for setting speed and distance aviation records, as well as his partnership with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith on many famous flights, which included the 1928 first crossing of the Pacific Ocean in the Southern Cross, along with establishing Australian National Airways. Charles Ulm disappeared during a flight on December 3, 1934 while attempting a flight from San Francisco to Sidney. The co-pilot of this air mail flight was another noted aviator named George Urquhart Allan who at the age of 17 joined the Royal Flying Corps and served on the Western Front with RFC Squadron 71, and RAF Squadrons 11, 47, and 58. After the war he flew air services in the Middle East until 1928 when he was recruited by Charles Ulm. Allan joined Ulm and Charles Kingsford Smith in their newly formed Australian National Airways. Allan acted as a co-pilot for both Ulm and Kingsford Smith on numerous long distance record flights and newly established airmail flights. In 1934 Allan was the pilot of the first flight from England to Australia. In the 1930's he was also appointed Flight Superintendent of Qantas Airways and during World War II he served as a Wing-Commander with the R.A.F. The third signature on the cover is of R.N. Bolton who served as the flight engineer on the flight. The cover is marked as the ''First Official Air Mail Australia to Papua and New Guinea and notes Charles Ulm as the commander. The autographs are signed on the left side of the cover in black and blue fountain pen as follows, ''G. Allan'', ''R.N. Bolton'' ''CH. Ulm''. The cover contains [5] five Australian postage stamps and numerous postmarks [both front and rear] from its various stops. The cover measures 6.50 x 3.75 inches, other then two pieces of tape on the rear and trivial wear the cover is in fine condition. The cover is quite rear to find unsigned, this example is very desirable especially with the autograph of Charles Ulm.
